“Hey! Here’s your birthday invitation. Please remember to tell your parents about this.” It was the period before school started, and Simon was handing out birthday invitations for his upcoming birthday on Sunday. I was very surprised when he put one on my desk as ever since I had been born, I had never been invited to a birthday party before. [[#_msocom_1|[WS1]]]

After school, when I got home, I asked my parents about the birthday party invitation, and they agreed, but only if I did my homework. So I did my homework over Saturday, had my parents’ consent and on Sunday morning, after choosing the best outfit and packing all the things I needed, Simon’s mum picked me up at my home and drove me, along with a few other friends to their house.

At his house, we were amazed at just what was in there. There was a Playstation 3, a Nintendo Wii, half a dozen computers and a big television that could have been 2 metres wide. He also had a large swimming pool, and invited us to go for a swim.
[[#_msocom_2|[WS2]]] So I stayed behind and decided to look around the house. [[#_msocom_3|[WS3]]]

The dining room had been set for us, and I saw all sorts of nice-looking food laid out on the table. Just then, I thought something had moved. It was a person, and he was John. John had been invited but I thought he had gone off swimming with the others. So I decided to watch a little bit to see what he was doing. Then, what I saw shocked me. John had stood in front of the cake stand, and
[[#_msocom_4|[WS4]]] , took the cake off the top, pulled out another cake stand from his bag (though that was not identical, nobody would probably notice) and proceeded to take out a spring, opened the top of the cake stand, put it in, and put the cake back on. I decided to take pictures of him and took out my mobile phone, but I had forgotten to mute it…

John looked around, frightened by the sound of my camera shot. He started to wrap up and quickly left, but not until I had taken 2 more pictures of him (luckily they were muted). I decided to check the cake stand. I took off the cake first, as a precaution, and when I was feeling around it, I suddenly pressed a button, and the front of the plate shot up with a click. So that was what it was for! If someone pressed the button they would certainly end up with a cake in their face.
[[#_msocom_5|[WS5]]]

[[#_msocom_6|[WS6]]]

So, after Simon and the rest went into the house back from swimming, I proceeded to tell him about what John had planned.
[[#_msocom_7|[WS7]]] I had to say it was good enough, but the only thing was, China are not really supposed to be trusted) and if the plate was actually only intended for lefties, it would mean that the slice of cake would not be even hitting John, but the person in front of him.[[#_msocom_8|[WS8]]]

[[#_msocom_9|[WS9]]]

I could have said that it was the best birthday party I had. But then John has not forgiven me yet, and though we are on speaking terms I still think he holds a grudge or two against me. I do not have any birthday parties upcoming, so it can be a long time before someone decides to have revenge on me for what I did on Simon’s birthday party.
----

[[#_msoanchor_1|[WS1]]]Tells that he is rich.

[[#_msoanchor_2|[WS2]]]Shows that “I” have a modest character.

[[#_msoanchor_3|[WS3]]]Shows that the household is rich, as clean is sometimes associated with rich.

[[#_msoanchor_4|[WS4]]]Somewhat suspicious personality of John.

[[#_msoanchor_5|[WS5]]]Reason for the trick.

[[#_msoanchor_6|[WS6]]]This is the dilemma.

[[#_msoanchor_7|[WS7]]]Retaliation, also gives some evidence that Simon is a fun guy.

[[#_msoanchor_8|[WS8]]]Complication arises.

[[#_msoanchor_9|[WS9]]]Can be the resolution, or a complication.
Comment by Tianyi:

Comment by Jeremy
"I had to say it was good enough, but the only thing was, China are not really supposed to be trusted " What does this sentence mean. In other words, ???
Comment by Collin:
Why can't you just go forward to remove the trick?
